War Eagle: The Life of Robin Olds

Legendary Fighter Ace

Brig. Gen. Robin Olds was born into a military tradition. His father was a pilot, Maj. Gen. Robert Olds, who was responsible for developing the B-17 Flying Fortress, who was also aide to Gen. Billy Mitchell. Legendary bomber commander Gen. Curtis E. LeMay was a protege of Robert Olds. His son Robin grew up in the lofty atmosphere of heroes always being around and he learned much from them.

Robin attended West Point and was an All American football player. Becoming a fighter pilot he served in the European Theater during WW II becoming a successful and famous ace flying the P-38 Lighting and P-51 Mustang. His marriage to film star Ella Raines kept him out of the Korean War, but still saw him stationed around the world. Later he took his ingenuity and daring brilliance into the skies of Vietnam flying the F-4 Phantom leading one of the most successful fighter wings of that war.

Working with his daughter Christina Olds from her book, Fighter Pilot (with Ed Rasimus and Robin Olds) and the interviews conducted by Colin Heaton with Olds and others, and with additional research providing new information, this amazing true story explores the hardships of combat leadership while navigating the politics of Washington, which were (and still are) at odds with each other. Robin Olds was the ultimate warrior and pilot. He was also one of the greatest Americans of the greatest generation.
